Navigation For Beginners

This practical, one-day navigation course will cover the essential skills needed to navigate confidently and safely in rural areas and hilly terrain. It’s perfect for anyone new to navigation or those looking to refresh their skills. The course is led by an experienced and qualified mountain leader who will guide you through the fundamentals, ensuring you feel confident using your map and compass by the end of the day.

 

You will learn how to:

  • Read a map and recognize key symbols.

  • Use a compass to take bearings and find directions.

  • Navigate confidently in unfamiliar environments.

  • Stay safe while hiking in rural areas.

Two-Day Advanced Navigation Course

Push your navigation skills to the next level with our two-day advanced navigation course in the Peak District. This course is designed for experienced hikers, fell runners, mountaineers, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to confidently navigate complex terrain, even in adverse weather conditions. Through practical exercises and real-world scenarios, you'll refine your map reading, compass techniques, and route-planning strategies—preparing you for solo hikes, remote expeditions, and all kinds of off-trail adventures.

  • Route planning and micro-navigation

  • Night and poor visibility navigation

  • Emergency procedures and relocation

  • Navigating using natural features

  • GPS & digital tools integration

This one-day navigation course is specifically tailored for fell runners who want to learn how to navigate during trail and fell runs. Unlike standard navigation courses, our session is structured to fit the unique demands of fell runners—combining practical map and compass skills with techniques for navigating routes at speed and in variable weather conditions.​ You’ll learn in real-world conditions, working with an experienced fell runner and mountain leader who understands the demands of navigating while maintaining your running momentum.

You'll learn techniques such as:

  • Compass skills for runners (e.g. bearings and pacings)

  • Efficient map reading on the move

  • Navigating unmarked terrain

  • Route choice and planning

  • Poor visibility navigation techniques

  • Relocation strategies and emergency procedures
